To trade CS2 skins outside your friends list, your Steam profile and your inventory both have to be set to Public. This guide shows where the setting is in Steam in 2026, what Public, Friends Only and Private show to other people, and why trading sites and inventory checkers cannot see your items without it. It also covers the trade URL and the 7-day Steam Trade Protection that applies to every CS2 item you receive in a trade.
The short version: open steamcommunity.com/my/edit/settings, set My profile and Inventory to Public, and Steam saves the change on its own. Then you can trade on SkinsMonkey or check what your skins are worth.
Public, Friends Only or Private: What Each Setting Shows
Steam has three privacy states for your profile: Public, Friends Only and Private. Inside the profile you set separate levels for parts of it, such as Game details, Friends List, Inventory and Comments.

A Private profile is useful if you do not want friends to see what you play. It hides your games, friends list and activity, and nobody can post comments on it. For trading it is the wrong setting, because the other side of a trade needs to see your items.
How to Make Your Steam Profile Public in 2026
The quickest way is the direct link to the Profile Privacy Settings page, steamcommunity.com/my/edit/settings, while you are logged in to Steam. If you prefer to click through, it works the same in the Steam client and in a browser:
- Open your profile. In Steam, click your name at the top and choose Profile.
- Click Edit Profile. The link is under the badge shown on your profile.
- Open Privacy Settings. It is a tab in the menu on the left.
- Set My profile to Public. Click the current value next to My profile and pick Public.
- Check the result. Steam saves every change on its own. There is no Save button.
Steam Support describes the same steps on its Steam Profile Privacy page. If a site still shows your profile as private after the change, reload the page on that site.
How to Make Your CS2 Inventory Public
The profile setting alone is not enough. Inventory has its own level on the same Privacy Settings page, and it can be Private even when the profile is Public. Scroll down to Inventory and set it to Public as well.
Steam does not let the inventory be more open than the profile. If My profile is Friends Only, the inventory cannot be Public, so set the profile first and the inventory second. Your games, friends list and comments can stay Friends Only or Private. Trading needs only the profile and the inventory.
Why Your Inventory Has to Be Public to Trade
- Trading sites load your items from Steam. When you sign in on SkinsMonkey, the site reads your Public inventory to show your skins under “You Offer”. With a Private or Friends Only inventory, that list stays empty.
- Inventory checkers need it too. Our free CS2 Inventory Value Checker reads only what Steam shows publicly. If your inventory is Friends Only or Private, it sees nothing and tells you the inventory is private.
- Trade offers still go through Steam. A Public inventory lets others see your items. It does not let anyone take them. Every trade is a Steam trade offer that you confirm yourself in the Steam Guard app.
You can switch the inventory back to Private after a trade or a value check. Just remember to make it Public again before your next trade, or the site will not load your items.
Your Trade URL: The Second Thing Sites Ask For
A public inventory lets a site see your items. Your trade URL lets it send you a trade offer. You find it in Steam under Inventory, Trade Offers, “Who can send me Trade Offers?”, or directly at steamcommunity.com/my/tradeoffers/privacy. Your trade URL cannot be used to log in to your account. If you create a new one, the old link stops working, so update it on every site where you trade.
Steam Trade Protection: The 7 Days After Every CS2 Trade
Since July 2025, every CS2 item you receive in a trade is Trade Protected for 7 days. The item arrives at once and you can use it in game, but for those 7 days you cannot trade it again, sell it, change it or put it in a Storage Unit. This applies to trades with players and with trading bots alike.
The reason is account safety. If someone takes over an account and trades its skins away, the owner can reverse all trades with Trade Protected items from the last 7 days. The account that starts the reversal is then blocked from trading and the Steam Community Market for 30 days. Its trade partners are not punished. According to Steam Support, CS2 items have no trade holds or trade escrow, because Trade Protection replaced them.
For you this means one thing: plan your trades a week ahead. A skin you get today can go into your next trade only after 7 days.
Is a Public Steam Profile Safe?
Yes, for most players. A Public profile shows your name, avatar, games and items. It does not show your email, password or payment details, and nobody can trade or log in with what they see on your profile.
- Turn on the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator. Every trade then needs your confirmation on your phone. Our Steam Guard guide shows how to set it up.
- Only sign in through steamcommunity.com. A site that asks for your Steam password in its own form is not a real trading site.
- Read every trade offer in Steam before you confirm it: item names, wear and the account on the other side.
- If you do not want people to see what you play, set Game details to Private. Trading does not need it.

Trading sites and inventory checkers can only read what Steam shows publicly, so a Friends Only or Private inventory looks empty to them. Your games, friends list and comments do not need to be public for trading.
A public inventory does not put your skins at risk, because every trade needs your own confirmation in Steam. Plan for the 7-day Trade Protection on everything you receive, and keep your trade URL up to date on the sites you use.

How do I make my Steam inventory public?
Open steamcommunity.com/my/edit/settings, or click Edit Profile on your Steam profile and open Privacy Settings. Set My profile to Public, then set Inventory to Public. Steam saves both changes on its own.
Why does a trading site say my inventory is private?
Your Inventory setting in Steam is Friends Only or Private. Set it to Public on the Privacy Settings page and reload the site. My profile must be Public too, because Steam does not let the inventory be more open than the profile.
Can I trade CS2 skins with a private profile?
Only with friends, and only if your profile and inventory are set to Friends Only. Trading sites and bots cannot see a Friends Only or Private inventory, so for them both settings must be Public.
Is it safe to make my Steam inventory public?

Why can't I trade a skin I just received?
