A new weapon called the M14 is sitting in Counter-Strike 2's files, and YouTube is full of videos about it. The entry arrived on September 23, 2026, inside the same build as the Rush Hour update, and dataminers aquaismissing and Thour spotted it within hours. Valve has not said a word about it, and the gun cannot be bought or picked up in any mode.

We did not want to write this one from tweets, so we opened the raw weapons file ourselves, using SteamDB's public copy of the game files, and checked every later build up to October 5. Some of what is going around is wrong. The M14 has five rounds in the magazine, not one. It aims through iron sights rather than a sniper scope. Half of its stats are copied straight from the AWP, firing sound included, which tells you how early this prototype is.

Anything in this article that does not come from the files is marked as speculation, and we will update the piece as soon as Valve ships something more. If you want to sort out your rifles and snipers before a new gun shakes up the buy menu, you can trade CS2 skins on SkinsMonkey at any time.

One Entry in weapons.vdata: Where the M14 Came From

Every gun in CS2 is defined in a file called weapons.vdata, which holds its price, damage, magazine size, movement speed and dozens of other values. The build Valve shipped on September 23 (the Rush Hour update) added a block called weapon_m14 to that file. It was not there in the previous version from May, and none of the roughly ten builds Valve has released since, up to October 5, has changed a single value in it.

What the files do not contain says as much as what they do:

  • No model. The path weapons/models/m14/weapon_rif_m14.vmdl and an M14 animation skeleton appear only in a configuration file for Valve's animation preview tool. The model itself is not in any of the game's archives, and the weapon's own world model field is empty.
  • No name or description in the English localization file, which is where every buyable weapon gets the text you see in the buy menu.
  • No entry in items_game.txt, the file that defines skins, collections and which team can buy what.
  • A flag that makes the weapon impossible to pick up.

So if you have seen a video of someone firing a finished-looking M14 in CS2, that is a custom or community model. Valve has not shipped one.

M14 Stats From the Files, Next to the AWP and SSG 08

The CS2 M14 entry in weapons.vdata with values copied from the AWP highlighted

These are the raw values for the M14, with the two current bolt-action snipers for comparison. All numbers come from the same file.

M14 (leaked) AWP SSG 08
Price $4,100 $4,750 $1,700
Base damage 115 115 88
Headshot multiplier 4x 4x 4x
Armor ratio 1.95 1.95 1.7
Range modifier 0.945 0.99 0.98
Magazine 5 5 10
Time between shots 1.85 s 1.455 s 1.25 s
Speed (normal / aiming) 200 / 130 200 / 100 230 / 230
Zoom Iron sights 2-level scope 2-level scope
Kill reward $100 $100 $300

The M14 also carries five spare rounds and reloads one round at a time, the way the Nova does. Two values stand out. The M14 fires noticeably slower than the AWP, about 0.4 seconds more between shots, and it loses damage over distance much faster.

Half of These Numbers Are the AWP's

Put the two blocks side by side and the pattern is hard to miss. Base damage, headshot multiplier, armor ratio, penetration, kill reward and the ammo type (.338 Magnum) are identical to the AWP. The firing sound is literally the AWP's sound event, the animation class is called “weapon_temp”, and the model fields are empty.

The real M14 is a semi-automatic battle rifle chambered in 7.62×51mm NATO. A CS2 version that fires AWP rounds slower than the AWP does not match the gun it is named after.

Our reading, and this is speculation, is that a Valve developer copied the AWP's block as a starting point so the weapon could be tested, and only changed the values that matter for the idea being tested. Those changed values are the interesting ones: a lower price, faster damage falloff, iron sights, better movement while aiming and a slower cycle. Expect the copied ones to change before any release.

Iron Sights, Not a Scope: How the M14 Would Play

Most of the coverage calls the M14 a new sniper rifle. The files say otherwise. The weapon is filed under rifles, not snipers. Its zoom levels have no magnification at all (a field of view of 90, the same as not zooming), and the actual aiming comes from an aim-down-sights setting with a field of view of 75. For comparison, the AUG and SG 553 use 45 when you aim with them. So the M14 would raise to iron sights with a slight zoom, show no crosshair from the hip like the snipers, and drop out of the sights after every shot.

The damage falloff is what really separates it from the AWP. Using CS2's standard damage formula, our own back-of-the-envelope math gives this:

  • A chest shot on an armored player kills up to roughly 1,000 units away, about 19 meters. The AWP keeps that one-shot range to well over 5,000 units.
  • Without armor, the M14's one-shot chest range stretches to roughly 1,200 units.
  • Headshots kill at any realistic distance either way.

Add a base spread ten times wider than the AWP's and 130 movement speed while aiming (the AWP drops to 100 when scoped), and our guess at the design is a close and mid-range one-shot weapon for aggressive players. It would sit between the Scout and the AWP in price, without competing with the AWP for long angles. Treat that as speculation until Valve shows the gun.

What Is Still Speculation

None of the following is in the files, so nobody can tell you yet:

  • Release date. There is no sign of the M14 in patch notes, the store or the buy menu.
  • Team. Buy restrictions live in items_game.txt, which has no M14 entry, so T side, CT side or both is unknown.
  • Name. “M14” is the internal name. Valve could ship the weapon under a different one.
  • Final stats. The AWP placeholders almost guarantee changes.
  • Mode. It could end up in Competitive and Premier, or only in casual modes like Rush, or never leave internal testing.

Two claims we can rule out from the files. The idea that the M14 has “one bullet in the chamber and five magazines” comes from a misread of the ammo fields: the magazine holds five rounds and there are five in reserve. And “scoped sniper” is not accurate either, as shown above.

What a New Weapon Would Mean for CS2 Skins

No skins exist for the M14, and nothing in the files suggests any are ready. If Valve does release it, that means a brand new weapon slot for skins, something CS players have not had since the MP5-SD arrived in CS:GO in 2018. MP5-SD skins followed in later cases, and the first M14 finishes would most likely arrive the same way, through a new case or collection. Our guide to the best CS2 cases to open is where we will add it if that happens.

As for the AWP, we see no reason for AWP skin prices to react to a leak. Based on the current values, the M14 is a different tool for different situations, and the AWP stays the long-range weapon it has always been. If the M14 does reach Competitive, cheap M14 skins could be in demand for a while, simply because everyone will want one on day one. FAQ

Is the M14 in CS2?

Not as a playable weapon. Its stats were added to the game files on September 23, 2026, but there is no model, no name in the game's text files and no way to buy or pick it up. Valve has not announced it.

How much will the M14 cost in CS2?

The files list a price of $4,100, which is $650 less than the AWP. Valve has not confirmed the weapon, so the price can still change.

Is the M14 a sniper rifle in CS2?

Not according to the files. It is classified as a rifle and uses iron sights with a slight zoom instead of a sniper scope, although its base damage, 115, matches the AWP's.

When will the M14 be released in CS2?

There is no release date. The weapon's data has not changed in any build since September 23, and nothing in the files points to a launch window.
