On September 22, 2026, Valve shipped the Rush Hour update which included some of the biggest in-game overhauls in a long time, most notably adding a brand new game mode, alongside other changes. However, outside of the 3v3 Rush game mode, this update also added CS2 chicken eggs.
CS2 chickens are a new pet cosmetic added to Counter-Strike 2 in the latest update. Players receive a Chicken Egg through the Weekly Drop, which hatches into a chick and then grows into a full chicken. There are three chicken breeds and over 30 colour variants, and Valve did not mention the feature in its official patch notes, effectively making this a quite literal ‘easter egg'.
- How you get one: Only through the Weekly Drop, which takes up both reward slots
- How it develops: Egg → chick → adult chicken, tracked in a “Hatchbook” collection screen
- Variety: 3 breeds (Chicken, Polish, Silkie) with 30+ colour variants across them
- Trading status: Currently untradable and not listable on the Steam Community Market
This article covers what the chicken egg is, how to get one, what happens after it hatches, what the datamines say about rarity, and what all of this could mean for the CS2 skin market.
A note on sourcing: Valve has not said a word about this system. Everything below comes from what players are seeing in-game, from screenshots and clips shared on Reddit and X, and from dataminers such as Gabe Follower and CSMENT. We flag speculation as speculation.
Key takeaways:
- Chicken eggs arrive through the Weekly Drop and take up both reward slots (player reports confirmed by Dexerto).
- The egg sits in a small basket next to your character in the main menu, with a tooltip that reads “Your egg will hatch soon.” It hatches into a chick, and the chick grows into a full chicken.
- Chickens come in three breeds and over 30 colour variants, and players can name them, feed them and record them in a Hatchbook.
- Eggs currently cannot be traded or listed on the Steam Community Market (community reports; not confirmed by Valve).
- Valve has not confirmed rarities, drop odds or future trading, so claims about “rare chickens” are speculation at this stage.
How the Chicken Egg Was Discovered
The first report that spread widely came from Reddit user u/YamTurbulent8960, who shared a screenshot of a Chicken Egg in their CS2 drop with the title “What is this?”. Other players started checking their drops and found the same thing. Dataminer Gabe Follower quickly linked it to the content that had been, in the game files since 2025. CSMENT then found hatching and movement animations, chicken sounds and a new folder called “Pet Book” in the updated files.
By the morning there were videos showing the full pickup animation, clips of the egg turning into a chick and then a chicken and a Reddit thread listing every chicken skin the files have. Valve has not said anything.
How to Get a Chicken Egg in CS2
The only known method is the Weekly Drop. After the Rush Hour update, the egg replaced the usual two-slot reward for the players who received it: instead of choosing between two separate items, like a skin and a case. the egg occupies both slots (reported by Dexerto and by content creator BancCS, who described it as “costing both credits”). This means that if you select an egg in the weekly drop, you won't be able to claim any other prizes for that week.
This means:
- You need to earn a Weekly Drop the normal way, by levelling up your weekly XP through matches.
- You cannot buy an egg from the in-game store, and you cannot buy one from another player. At the moment eggs are untradable.
- It is not yet clear whether every account receives an egg on its next drop. Reports so far come from a limited number of players, and Valve has not said whether the egg is guaranteed, random or rolled out in waves (this is an open question, not a confirmed mechanic).
There is no other confirmed source for eggs. An earlier datamine from August 2025 (Gabe Follower, via Escorenews) suggested eggs might be linked to a future “auction” feature in the Armory, but nothing in the current build points to that being live, and the Weekly Drop is the only route anyone has used so far. For now, eggs remain a strictly visual upgrade, without any trading or in-game value.
What Happens After You Claim the Egg
Once claimed the egg does not go into your inventory like a case or a sticker. It appears in the menu next to your character model, where you can inspect the egg up close. From there the process players have documented looks like this:
- The egg waits. The egg sits in the menu for a period of time. On our account the tooltip already reads “Your egg will hatch soon.” without a timer. PC Gamer reports a week before hatching (community speculation based on early reports; Valve has not published a timer and nobody has yet documented a full hatch from start to finish).
- The chick hatches. There is a hatching animation, after which you have a chick in the menu. According to PC Gamer and Dexerto you can pet the chick, inspect the chick and give the chick a name.
- The chick grows. With chicken feed, which appears as an item the chick eventually grows into an adult chicken. The feeding mechanic is described by PC Gamer; how much feed is needed and where it comes from is not yet confirmed. A video shared by Ozzny shows all three stages side by side: egg, chick, chicken.
- The chicken learns tricks. Players have already found a set of “trick” animations for the chick along with a photo booth feature and the ability to have the bird sit on your shoulder in the loadout screen (from clips shared on X and collected by PC Gamer).
Alongside all this is the Hatchbook, a collection interface where you can drag and drop photos of your chickens to keep a record of them (screenshots, by Reddit user u/cubeself reported by Dexerto). A collection interface is the reason traders are paying attention because in Counter‑Strike collections have always turned into markets.
What the Egg Looks Like In-Game
This is what we can confirm from our own account rather than from other people's clips.
After claiming the Weekly Drop, the egg appeared in the main menu in a small red wicker basket lined with straw, placed on the ground a step to the right of the character model. It showed up in the same spot on both menu backgrounds we had, Mirage and an industrial map. There is no inventory entry to open, no case-style animation and nothing to click in the loadout screen. The basket is simply part of the menu scene, alongside the timer.

Hovering the cursor over the basket brings up an egg icon, a short status line and two small buttons. The status line on our account reads “Your egg will hatch soon.” One button opens the inspect view, the other is an interaction control. We could not find any timer, progress bar or feeding prompt at this stage, so the egg appears to be a purely passive item until it hatches.

The inspect view works like weapon inspect: the camera cuts to a gloved hand holding the egg against the menu map background, with the item name “Chicken Egg” at the top of the screen. Ours is a plain beige egg with light brown speckles. Other players have posted eggs in different colours, which is one reason the community suspects the variant is decided before hatching, though that is unconfirmed.
The basket is also visible in the party lobby. In a party with two friends, the egg sat at our character's feet with all three player models on screen. That makes it the first pet-style item in CS2 that other people can see without inspecting your profile, which matters for how much players will care about it.
Chicken Breeds, Colours and the Rarity Question
The game files have three chicken types reported so far: a Chicken, a Chicken Polish (the one with the feathery top) and a Chicken Silkie (the soft white one). Each type has color options. Other people who looked through the files counted 13 for the type 12 for Polish and 9 for Silkie, which makes 34 total. A Reddit post by u/whitewolf20 says 35. The difference is probably one item counted in a way so the safe number is more than 30 unique chicken looks in the game files.
Many of them are not like chickens. In addition to the brown, white and tan chickens the files have bright blue, purple and yellow blue fading, nuclear red and toxic green chickens and more (color details from the Reddit post and PC Gamer). Some of them could be, at the top of a rarity list if such a thing exists.

The current state of knowledge:
- Confirmed by the game files, player clips and our own account: three breeds, over 30 colour variants, an inspect view that works like weapon inspect, and the basket being visible to other players in a party lobby.
- Not confirmed: whether some variants are rarer than others, whether the variant is decided when the egg drops or when it hatches, whether feeding or care affects the outcome, and whether you can influence which chicken you get in any way.
The same August 2025 datamine suggested colour patterns might be “unique for every account”, which would be a very different system from a rarity ladder. Nothing in the current build settles that question. Anyone claiming to own a “Covert chicken” is guessing.
Can You Trade or Sell CS2 Chicken Eggs?
At the moment CS2 chickens can't be traded or sold. Reports from players who have received the egg are consistent: it cannot be traded and it cannot be listed on the Steam Community Market (community reports collected on Reddit and cited by TalkEsport; Valve has not confirmed this). Whether the same applies to the hatched chick and the adult chicken is not yet known, since no egg has been documented hatching yet.
This may change. Valve has adjusted the rules around existing items before (souvenir skins becoming usable in trade-ups earlier this year is the most recent example), and a cosmetic with over 30 variants and a dedicated collection book is not the kind of feature you build if you intend it to stay non-transferable forever.
What we can say is that if chickens ever become tradable, the first wave of eggs from September 2026 will be the oldest in existence, and Counter-Strike collectors have always cared about that, meaning they will most likely be the most expensive CS2 chickens.
Why Valve Left It Out of the Patch Notes?
We can only guess. The omission fits how Valve usually operates. Valve has shipped surprise content in the past from hidden map Easter eggs to features that stayed in the game files for months before being turned on. By leaving the egg out of the notes Valve turns a feature launch into a community discovery. It also gives Valve space to adjust timers, odds and trading rules before writing any of them down.
The only place the changelog mentions chickens, at all is a Gameplay line stating that chickens can now take damage from the Zeus x27.
What the Chicken Egg Means for CS2 Trading
There is no immediate market impact, because there is nothing to buy or sell. That is unusual for a major CS2 update: the knife crafting update and the May souvenir overhaul both moved prices within hours, while this one has so far only moved the discussion.
Four points for anyone who trades:
- It is a new collectible category. CS2 has weapon finishes, knives, gloves, agents, stickers, patches, charms, music kits and pins. Pets are the newest addition to that list, and every previous category has ended up with a secondary market, charms being the most recent example.
- Weekly Drops just became more interesting. For a long time the Weekly Drop was a minor footnote. If eggs keep arriving through it, it becomes the only source of a collectible people want, which raises the value of the drop itself.
- Watch the variant question. If Valve confirms a rarity system, prices will follow it immediately. If chickens turn out to be account-unique, there will be much less to trade. Nothing you own today depends on this, but it is the most important open question.
- Do not overpay for anything “chicken-related” yet. Expect a wave of listings, Discord offers and case sites claiming to sell eggs or rare chickens. Since the item cannot currently be transferred, any such offer is either a scam or a misunderstanding.
If the update has you reconsidering your inventory, you can trade CS2 skins on SkinsMonkey right now, and our guide to the best CS2 cases to open is up to date for September. We will update this article as soon as Valve says anything official, or as soon as the first eggs finish hatching and the rarity picture becomes clearer.
