The release of Counter-Strike 2 was one of the biggest gaming releases of the last couple of years. While it has refreshed the classic online FPS, some players feel that CS2 is a different game entirely compared to its predecessor, CS:GO.

While it’s nice to enjoy everyone’s favorite shooter in a refreshed look, the changes brought in by Counter-Strike 2 were far more than just simple visuals. Here are all the most important differences between CSGO and CS2!

Revamped Graphics in Counter-Strike 2

Let’s get the obvious out of the way – one of the biggest improvements in CS2 was the entirely new graphics engine. This gave the game a completely refreshed look, which was a much needed improvement, considering CSGO was over a decade old when it received the upgrade to CS2. While the graphics weren’t very outdated, considering the game received continuous updates throughout its existence, it didn’t hold up as well by 2023, especially when compared to other online shooters of its time.

CS2 completely refreshed the game’s look, bringing it more up to date with modern standards. Counter-Strike 2 takes full advantage of the Source 2 engine’s capabilities, with completely refreshed player models, weapons, maps, lighting and more. The core gameplay remains the same, but the game has a completely refreshed look, bringing it more up to modern standards.

New Ranked Mode for Competitive Play

One of the most important changes introduced in the new version of the game was the change to CS2 ranks and the ranked CS game mode in general. While previously the game was simply split between casual and competitive play, CS2 introduced a brand new separate ranked mode, with its own ranks.

Counter-Strike 2 split the competitive gameplay into two separate modes – competitive and premier. Each mode has its own separate ranking, with a different method of grading player performance. Competitive mode is more akin to the classic Counter-Strike: Global Offensive ranked gameplay, with the traditional ranks from Silver to Global Elite, with one significant difference being that now you get a separate rank for each of the active duty maps. In comparison, Premier mode uses a single CS Rating number for each individual player, based on their match results. While the competitive mode allows players to enjoy some ranked CS in a more relaxed setting, the premier mode is a better reflection of player’s individual skill level. New Sub-Tick System

Many players aren’t aware of this feature, but CS2 rates and the server tick rate play one of the most important roles in competitive Counter-Strike. While it’s more of a technical detail, it still determines a lot about the gameplay and how smooth your shooting is. In short, the tick rate dictates how often the server updates with the data packets it receives. While CS:GO matchmaking servers ran at 64 tick (many third-party platforms used 128), CS2 introduced a completely new feature with its sub-tick system.

To put it briefly, the sub-tick system makes the gameplay even smoother and provides a more responsive experience. The new sub-tick update architecture ensures that all in-game actions are equally responsive, enhancing the responsiveness of movement and shooting. While it might not seem like a major overhaul, the server now registers the exact moment you click or move, instead of rounding every action to the next tick. Improved Smoke Grenades

The improvements added to smoke grenades with the CS2 updates are far more than just visual. All competitive players know very well how important smoke grenades are. From clutch moments to start of the round, effective smokes make huge difference. CS2 brings the smoke game to a whole new level, with several changes that give smoke grenades a major technical overhaul.

The old smoke grenades in CSGO were just simple textures projected over the game world, but with the change introduced in CS2 smoke grenades and the clouds they create become real parts of the game environment. This means that they are now affected by gunfire, HE grenades, the shape of the area, and other factors. This adds tactical depth to the game, which makes grenades in CS even more important, especially at higher ranks, where skill matters even more.

Improved Buy Menu

CS 1.6 featured an infamously difficult-to-navigate buy menu, where players had to memorize specific patterns on their keyboard if they wanted to buy everything in the short period of time they were allotted. CS:GO slightly improved on the buy menu feature, though the game still required you to memorize where everything was if you wanted to not waste precious time scrolling around the buy menu.

CS2 gave the buy menu a complete overhaul, improving the menu’s visibility and showing every weapon and item in your loadout on a single screen, each one a single click away. This is a significant improvement, making managing your CS2 economy far easier.

Map Design Overhaul

One of the biggest changes that affected the actual gameplay added in CS2 was the various CS map overhauls. Professional players have invested tens of thousands of hours mastering CS:GO maps, and they now face significant challenges in adapting to the new maps in CS2. This was a very controversial change that had many gamers worried since the best CS maps are crafted with absolute care. It’s not an overstatement that adding a single corridor or window can completely ruin the game’s balance.

To counteract this issue, Valve sorted the maps into three groups, based on how much work went into bringing each one to Source 2. The three groups were:

Touchstone Maps

This group includes maps such as Dust2, Mirage and Vertigo. Touchstone maps are the absolute classics, which received the fewest changes in CS2. Since these maps were already quite balanced and are some of the fan favorites, they mostly received lighting and readability improvements, with their layouts left as they were.

Upgrades

The upgrades group features maps such as Nuke and Ancient. These maps kept their existing designs but received Source 2’s new lighting and physically based rendering, which gives them more realistic lighting, reflections and materials.

Overhauls

The Overhauls group includes Overpass, Inferno and Italy. These maps were rebuilt from the ground up with Source 2’s tools and rendering techniques. Their layouts stayed largely familiar, though some areas now play slightly differently.

Improved Sound

CS2 sound settings are far more elaborate adding extra depth to the game. Sound plays an extremely important role in Counter-Strike, particularly at higher ranks, where sound cues play a really significant role, and effectively function as your second sight. If you know how to listen, you can learn a lot of information about your opponents, including their location, weapon choice, and more.

CS2 also features completely overhauled sound settings. This improved sound adds even more depth to the game, allowing you to use sound to your advantage. Also, if you want to get the best out of these sound settings, make sure you check out our guide to the best headsets for CS2.

In Conclusion

While Counter-Strike 2 certainly feels familiar to the vets, in many regards, it’s a different, upgraded game compared to CS:GO. The engine upgrade to Source 2 enhances the overall experience of the video game, offering not only visual upgrades but also significant gameplay changes.
