TL;DR

A CS2 Chicken Egg hatches on its own about five to seven days after you claim it, and you cannot speed it up. After that the pet lives on Chicken Feed from the Weekly Care Package, grows from chick to pullet to hen, and retires 140 days after hatching, or leaves early if the food runs out. The first pullets appeared on October 20, 2026, 22 days after the first hatch, and owners say one bag of feed lasts about three weeks.

You cannot hatch a CS2 chicken egg yourself. It hatches on its own about a week after you claim it, and nothing you click moves that date. Everything after the hatch is a care job: the chick lives on Chicken Feed from the Weekly Care Package, grows through three stages over 140 days, and leaves for good if the bowl runs empty. Valve put most of these rules into the item descriptions instead of the patch notes, which is why so many players learned them from a warning message.

This is the manual. It covers hatch timing as it played out on real accounts, the life cycle with dates you can plan around, how feeding works and what the game warns you about. How the eggs were found and how to get one is in our CS2 chicken eggs explainer, and every breed and color is in All CS2 Chicken Breeds and Colors. While you wait, the half of your inventory that can be traded can go to SkinsMonkey.

Updated October 22, 2026. The first chickens reached the pullet stage on October 20, 22 days after the September 28 hatch, so the chick stage from the game files held on real accounts. The pullet already shows its full breed and color. Owners who have been feeding since the first hatch say one bag of Chicken Feed lasts about three weeks and that bags stack, which Valve has not confirmed.

How to Hatch a CS2 Egg: You Wait, and That Is All

The Chicken Egg‘s own description says it hatches into a chick about a week after you get it. In practice it was a little faster. Eggs claimed on launch night, September 22, hatched on September 28 and 29, and the pet screens of those birds print the hatch date as September 28, 2026 GMT. Eggs claimed later hatched later: one chick that owners have posted shows an October 2 hatch date. The hatch date is fixed when you claim the egg, so the only way to an earlier chick was an earlier claim.

Two conditions apply. You need Prime, because the Weekly Care Package that delivers the egg only exists on Prime accounts. And you need to come back and log in, since the game files hold a message for an egg nobody looked after: “Never loved. Never hatched. Those two are related.” That line is Valve’s.

The CS2 Pet Life Cycle, With Dates

Only the egg’s week comes from Valve’s own text. The stage lengths below come from the game files, as read by dataminers. The first of them has now been checked against real accounts: the earliest chicks became pullets on October 20, 22 days after the September 28 hatch. The pullet and hen lengths are still waiting for their first bird.

  • Egg: hatches about five to seven days after you claim it.
  • Chick: 22 days, confirmed by the first pullets on October 20. Every egg hatches into the same yellow chick, which stays in the main menu and does not come into matches.
  • Pullet: 28 days, according to the files. The breed and color appear in full, as the first pullets showed, and the bird starts joining you in matches.
  • Hen: about 90 days as an adult, then retirement 140 days after the hatch.

For an egg that hatched on September 28, that schedule puts the pullet on October 20, the hen around November 17 and retirement around February 15, 2027. The first step has already happened: on October 20 and 21, several owners posted pet screens showing a September 28 hatch date and a fully colored bird, 22 days after the hatch. The hen date still depends on the datamined 28-day pullet stage holding, and we will update it when the first hens appear.

You can only have one pet at a time, according to the egg’s description, so there is no second chick to fall back on if this one leaves.

Chicken Feed: Skip the Weekly Drop and the Bird Walks Out

Feed is where the pet stops being free. The item text says your pet needs Chicken Feed from the Weekly Care Package to stay around, and if the food runs out, it leaves for good. You unlock the Care Package the usual way, with your first rank-up of the week on a Prime account, and claiming feed takes both reward slots, just like the egg did. In a week you take feed, you take no case, skin or graffiti.

The game gives you two warnings, according to a datamine of the game files:

  • “More feed is available” means a bag is waiting in your Care Package. Dataminers say it first shows up right after hatching, when the feeder is about half full.
  • “Running low on food” appears about nine days before the bowl is empty. Treat it as a deadline for your next weekly rank-up.

Valve has published no number for how many days one bag adds. Owners who have been feeding since the first hatch say a bag lasts about three weeks and that bags stack, one feeder was still over half full 19 days after a single fill, and feed does not show up in every weekly package. Treat that as community consensus from owner-reported trackers and forum threads, not a confirmed figure. We would still rank up once a week and take the feed every time the Care Package offers it. The weekly reset is Tuesday at 17:00 Pacific time, which is Wednesday 00:00 UTC in summer and 01:00 UTC in winter.

What to Do With a Chick While It Grows

A chick cannot follow you into matches, but there are three things to do with it in the meantime.

  • Name it. Naming opens at the chick stage, with up to 20 characters, and you can rename the bird once per stage (Inventory, then the pet, then Rename).
  • Photograph it. The Photo Booth puts the chick next to your agent, and since the October 2 update the agent wears your equipped gloves. The photos go into the HatchBook, which has pages for the chick, pullet and hen stages.
  • Plan your map backgrounds. From the pullet stage, finishing an official match on a map unlocks it as a photo location, so the maps you queue in late October and November decide which backgrounds you get.

The hats, poses and filters, and the rest of what we found in the pet scripts, are in our chicken breeds and colors guide.

Retirement: How a CS2 Chicken’s Life Ends

The files have two endings. A fed hen retires of old age 140 days after hatching, with the message “A Life Well Lived” and a memorial page in the HatchBook, as VGTimes reported from the files. A hungry pet leaves early, and Valve wrote jokes for that too: “Your pet has accepted a position elsewhere. The offer included meals.” The first owners saw that ending on October 19 and 20, when unfed birds walked away with the mocking message, and one chick hatched on October 2 was shown lying dead next to an empty feeder on October 15.

A chicken cannot die during a round, so the only real threat is an empty bowl. The first retirements, for the chicks that hatched on September 28 and 29, would fall around February 15 and 16, 2027.

What CS2 Pets Mean for Your Inventory

Nothing in the pet system can be traded. The egg, the feed and every chicken are non-tradable and non-marketable by Valve’s own item description, and the CS2 pets page on the SkinsMonkey WIKI lists them without prices for that reason. Anyone offering to sell you an egg, a bag of feed or a rare Silkie is offering something that cannot leave its account.

The real cost sits in the Weekly Care Package. Every week you claim feed is a week without a case or skin drop. If a bag really lasts about three weeks, as owners report, a bird that lives the full 140 days costs you six or seven weekly drops rather than twenty, which still matters if you usually sell yours.

The parts of the picture that do trade are your agent and your gloves, the two things standing next to the chicken in every HatchBook photo. If you want them to look better than the bird, you can trade CS2 skins on SkinsMonkey, and our knife and glove combos for every color have a pairing for a Pink Polish or a Purple Silkie.

FAQ

How do I hatch my egg in CS2?

You do not have to do anything. The egg hatches on its own about five to seven days after you claim it, as long as you keep logging in. The first eggs, claimed on September 22, 2026, hatched on September 28 and 29.

How long does a CS2 chicken live?

About 140 days from hatching, if it never runs out of food. The 22-day chick stage has now been seen on real accounts, with the first pullets on October 20, 2026, while the 28-day pullet and roughly 90-day hen stages still come from the game files. If the Chicken Feed runs out, the pet leaves earlier and does not come back.

How do I get Chicken Feed in CS2?

From the Weekly Care Package, which Prime accounts unlock with their first rank-up of the week. Claiming feed takes both reward slots, it is not offered every week, and the game warns you about nine days before the food runs out. Owners report that one bag lasts about three weeks and that bags stack, but Valve has not published a number.

When does a CS2 chick turn into a pullet?

22 days after hatching. The first pullets appeared on October 20, 2026, from eggs with a September 28 hatch date, which matches the figure in the game files. The pullet stage is when the breed and color appear and the bird starts joining you in matches.
