TL;DR
CS2 has 34 pet chicken colors across three breeds: 13 Catalana, 12 Polish and 9 Silkie. Every chick is yellow, the breed and color appear at the pullet stage, and Valve has published no odds, so nobody can say yet which chicken is the rarest.

Updated October 17, 2026: no chick had reached the pullet stage by October 16, so no player has seen their bird’s real color yet. The first reveals are due around October 21, and we will add what they show.
Every CS2 chicken egg hatches into the same yellow chick. The first ones came out on September 28 and 29, and the question in lobbies has moved from “when does it hatch” to “what am I going to get”. The answer is one of 34 colors across three breeds, and nobody outside Valve knows the odds.
Below is every variant, rendered by us from the game files, a straight answer on rarity and the details from the pet scripts that most guides skip. Hatching, feeding and the stage dates are in our CS2 pets guide, and the story of the egg is in CS2 Chicken Eggs Explained. If your chicken has you thinking about a nicer pair of hands for the photo booth, you can trade CS2 skins on SkinsMonkey any time.
Three Breeds, 34 Colors: Every CS2 Chicken
Every pet chicken belongs to one of three real-world breeds: Catalana, Polish or Silkie. The game never shows you a color name, but Valve’s material files do, and that is where the names below come from. The images are our own renders of each color as an adult hen, made from the game files.
| Breed | Colors | Default color | How to recognize it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Catalana | 13 | Tan | Classic farmyard chicken shape |
| Polish | 12 | Brown | Big feathered crest on the head |
| Silkie | 9 | White | Fluffy, round body |
Some sites list 36 or 40 entries. The extra ones are the egg and the chick, which databases count as pet items, and a handful of chicken materials in the files that no egg can produce (more on those below).
Catalana: 13 Colors

Tan (the default), Black White Head, White, Yellow and Red, Light Blue and Red, Black with Red Head, Blue, Dark Orange, Blue and Light Orange, Orange Blue Neck, Yellow Red Gradient, Grey, Black.
Polish: 12 Colors

Brown (the default), Black with White Head, White with Black Wing Tips, Brown with Black Wing Tips, White Black Head, Blue, Green with Red Head, Green, Pink, Blue Yellow, Orange White Blue, Orange with Black Stripes.
The Polish names are the least reliable of the three. “White with Black Wing Tips” is mostly dark brown, and “Orange with Black Stripes” looks more purple and gold, so go by the picture.
Silkie: 9 Colors

White (the default), Splash, Blue with Red Beard, Leopard, Red, Red Beetle, Orange, Purple, Aqua with Yellow.
Every Chick Is Yellow: When Breed and Color Show Up

You will not know what you have for the first three weeks. The game has one chick model in one color, so every chick is the same yellow fluffball. Breed and color appear together when it grows into a pullet, 22 days after hatching according to the game files, which puts the first reveals around October 21 for eggs that hatched on September 29. The game’s own text for that stage reads “Growing fast, colors coming in, and cleared to deploy with you”.
The egg does not give anything away either. Eggs come in several colors, and the chick’s description says the bird “shows its breed and style once it grows into a pullet”. From the pullet stage on, the look stays the same: the hen uses the same model and colors and is just bigger.
Which Chicken Is the Rarest? Nobody Knows Yet
Valve has published no odds, no rarity tiers and no seed ranges for chickens, and every pet item carries the same High Grade label. The closest thing to numbers is SkinSniper’s reading of the color weights in the files: Tan is the most common Catalana at about 21 percent, White leads the Silkies at about 29 percent and Pink leads the Polish birds at about 30 percent, with several colors listed as unknown. The files hold no odds for the breed itself, so those weights only rank colors inside a breed, and SkinSniper calls them unconfirmed.
We read them as a hint. The only way to real numbers is to count a few thousand pullets, and the first ones are only due in the week of October 20. Any site that already prints a “1 in 200” chicken is guessing.
One more thing turned up in the files. There are six chicken materials that no pet color uses, among them a Silkie called “tiger”, a black Silkie, a brown Silkie with a black head and a white Catalana with a tan head. They could be leftovers, textures for the ordinary map chickens or colors Valve is keeping for later. The files do not say, so this part is speculation, and none of them is a color you can hatch today.
There is also less at stake than with a skin. Chickens cannot be traded or sold on the Steam Market, so a rare color is bragging rights in your lobby and your HatchBook. The CS2 pets page on the SkinsMonkey WIKI lists every pet item, and none of them has a price.
Name It Three Times, and Other Things in the Game Files
We went through the pet scripts and text in the current build of CS2. A few details have barely been mentioned anywhere else.
You get one name per life stage. Naming opens once the egg hatches, with up to 20 characters, and the game checks a separate name slot for each stage after that. In practice you can name the chick, name it again as a pullet and once more as a hen.
The photo booth has 11 backgrounds, and most have to be earned. Studio and Picnic are open from the start, and Warehouse unlocks once the bird is a pullet. The other eight are real maps (Airport, which is the Baggage map, plus Dust II, Mirage, Inferno, Nuke, Cache, Train and Ancient), and each one unlocks when you finish a match on that map on official servers with an older pet. The game’s tip for chicks says it plainly: “Older pets can visit locations with you.” Short Rush matches are a quick way to collect maps, though check that the map you need is in the pool before you grind.
There is a lot to play with in the booth: 11 poses, 10 hats (from a helmet and a banana to a wizard hat), 7 actions including a dance, 9 effects such as lightning and confetti, 8 filters and 7 photo formats from square to vertical 9:16. Since the October 2 update, the agent in those photos also wears your equipped gloves, and the October 5 update gave the HatchBook pages localized text art, so the book now reads properly in other languages.
Valve also wrote jokes for neglect. If you stop feeding your bird, the retirement messages include “Turns out chickens need food. Who knew?”
What Chickens Mean for Your Inventory
Pets sit outside the skin economy. You cannot trade, sell or buy a chicken, and no color has market value. The parts of your inventory that do appear next to your chicken are your agent and your gloves, which both show up in the photo booth. If you want your HatchBook photos to look the part, you can swap skins on SkinsMonkey with instant bot trades, and our knife and glove combos for every color have a match for a Blue Catalana or a Purple Silkie.
FAQ
How many chicken colors are there in CS2?
There are 34 color variants across three breeds: 13 Catalana, 12 Polish and 9 Silkie. Sites that list 36 or more also count the egg and the chick, or chicken materials in the files that no egg can produce.
What is the rarest chicken in CS2?
Nobody knows yet. Valve has not published any odds, and the color weights read from the game files are unconfirmed. Real numbers need a large count of pullets, and the first ones are only due around October 21, 2026.
When does my CS2 chicken show its color?
At the pullet stage, 22 days after hatching according to the game files. Every chick is the same yellow, and the breed and color appear together when it grows into a pullet.
Can you trade or sell a CS2 chicken?
No. Eggs, chicks, grown chickens and Chicken Feed are non-tradable and cannot be listed on the Steam Market, so no chicken color has a price.
