Counter-Strike 2 has a Big Head Mode. It arrived with the update on the night of October 28, 2026, and Valve left it out of the release notes completely. In Casual, a small label above one map group now reads “Big Head Mode”. On those servers, players report that your head grows as you get kills and shrinks as you die, and that your voice changes with it. This article explains how the mode works, where to find it, what the game files say about the system behind it, and what else shipped in the same update, including the official silent reload change and new files for a rifle called LAR.
We checked the update files ourselves and played the mode on the morning of October 29, on Shelter. Everything that comes from player reports and not from the game or from Valve is marked as such. If you want your agent to look good with a head twice its normal size, you can swap agents and skins on SkinsMonkey with instant bot trades.
Where to Find Big Head Mode in CS2
Open Play, then Matchmaking, then Casual. One of the map group cards carries a small “Big Head Mode” tag with a running figure icon at the top. Queue for that group and the mode is on. You do not need to change any setting, and there is no separate playlist.
The tag does not stay on one group. Players first saw it on Defusal Group Alpha (Dust 2, Mirage, Inferno, Vertigo), and some later reported it on Defusal Group Delta. When we opened the menu on October 29, it sat on the Community Map Group with Boulder, Fachwerk and Shelter, so our test match was a hostage round on Shelter. In the match, the HUD shows the active mutator under the radar: a small “Big Head Mode” line with the same running figure icon. The game files explain this: the menu asks the server every second which “rotating official map group mutators” are active for each map, and shows the result on the card. So the mode moves between map groups on Valve’s schedule, and the tag in your menu is the only reliable way to know where it is.
Two limits come straight from the menu code. Mutators only show up in Casual, and only on Valve’s official servers. Workshop maps and community servers do not get them.
A few more shots from our matches, from the team select screen to the final scoreboard:

Better Players Get Bigger Heads
Each player has a head scale that the server sends to everyone in the match. Players report that every kill makes your head bigger and every death makes it smaller, so the top fragger walks around with the largest head on the server, and a player having a bad game ends up with a tiny one.
Our match on Shelter matched those reports. In one freeze time, two of our teammates had gas mask heads about twice the normal size, and the two players standing next to them looked completely normal. Later in the same match we watched the other team as a spectator. The Terrorist with 88 ADR had the biggest head we saw all game, while a Counter-Terrorist with 4 ADR looked almost normal. We could not tell from the screen whether the scale follows kills, deaths or overall score, only that the players doing well had the big heads.

Players assume the head hitbox grows and shrinks with the model, and the files do not show it either way. If it does, a bigger head is a bigger target, so the better you play, the easier you are to hit. In Casual, with ten players a side and no ranking at stake, that would work as a catch-up rule: the best player gets a small handicap, and everyone else gets a slightly easier shot at him.
With a head twice its normal size, your agent is the most visible thing you bring into a Casual match. Three agents with headgear that stands out at any size:
Sir Bloody Skullhead Darryl | The Professionals

A white skull mask over the face. With a scaled head, the mask is the first thing an enemy sees around a corner.

A blue helmet with a gold emblem and a gas mask with a blue filter, close to the gas mask heads in our Shelter match.

A diving hood with pink goggles pushed up on the forehead. On a big head, the goggles are hard to miss.
What Happens to Your Voice
The update added a sound file called “bighead_pitch”. Players report that it changes the pitch of voice chat and of the agent voice lines: top fraggers sound deep and loud, low scorers sound thin and squeaky. A Casual server under Big Head Mode is about as serious as that sounds, and we think that is the point.
Mutators: What Valve Is Building
Big Head Mode is the first “mutator” in CS2. That word is new in the game. The October 28 files add a counter of active mutators to the game rules, a new HUD panel titled “Active Mutators:”, and a menu that can show several mutators per map, each with its own icon and name. The code reserves room for up to 32 of them.
Valve has not said what comes next. A system with space for 32 rules and one entry tells us more mutators are planned, but not which ones. Classic party modifiers from other shooters (low gravity, one-shot pistols, random weapons) are the obvious guesses, and they are only guesses. Casual is the test ground, and Competitive and Premier are not affected.
Many players read Big Head Mode as a Halloween event that will disappear in November. Valve has not given an end date. The mode arrived three days before Halloween, which fits that reading, but the system behind it does not look temporary: it is built into the game rules, the HUD and the play menu, with rotation between map groups. Big Head Mode itself may leave after the holiday, and the mutator slot is likely to stay for the next one.
The Official Part: Silent Reload Hold or Toggle
The only gameplay change Valve put in the notes is for the silent reload that came with the Rush Hour update in September. A new “Silent Reload Mode” setting in the Keyboard and Mouse settings lets you choose between Hold and Toggle:
- Hold works as before. You keep the reload key pressed for the whole silent reload.
- Toggle starts the silent reload and lets you release the key. Tap reload again to cancel it and switch to a normal, faster reload.
The console variable behind it is cl_weapon_stealth_reload_toggle, off by default. Valve also fixed cases where the first sound of a reload could be heard even when you asked for a silent one, which was the main reason silent reloads felt unreliable in close fights. The other fixes are small: liquids no longer render black on AMD graphics cards, and some sound and UI bugs during demo rewind are gone.
LAR: The M14 Has a New Name and a Model
The same build added files for a weapon called LAR. In early October we wrote about the M14 entry in the CS2 files, which at that point had stats but no model, no name and no animations. Since then, the files moved in one direction:
- In the October 22 build, the weapon_m14 block disappeared from the file that defines every gun’s stats.
- In the October 28 build, a full weapon model called weapon_rif_lar arrived, with animations for drawing, iron sight shooting, reloading and a silent reload, plus a buy menu icon.
- The animation preview tool now calls the skeleton “LAR” where it used to say “M14” and “Temp”.
Dataminers describe the model as a lever-action rifle that loads one round at a time. The textures are stored in a folder named “do_not_ship” and use a temporary material, so this is still a work in progress. Valve has not announced the weapon, has not given it a name in the buy menu, and has not said whether it will ever ship. What LAR stands for is also unconfirmed; “lever-action rifle” is the popular reading, and it is speculation.
What Big Head Mode Means for Your Inventory
Big Head Mode does nothing to skin prices by itself. It is a Casual mutator, it does not drop anything, and it does not change any item. Where it matters is how much of your agent other players see. With a scaled head, the agent’s headgear, mask or patch is the most visible part of your model in every Casual match on that map group. If that is the part of your inventory you care about, our list of all CS2 agent skins shows what is available, from cheap Distinguished agents to Master agents.
LAR is a different story, but not yet. If Valve ever ships a new rifle, it would need its own skins, and new skins usually come with a case or collection. That is a long way off: today there is no item definition, no name and no skin slot for it. Prices of current rifles may move on rumours, and we would not trade on a weapon with a “do_not_ship” folder. If you want to change your loadout before the next update, you can trade CS2 skins on SkinsMonkey at any time.
Bottom line
Big Head Mode is a joke with a working system behind it
Valve hid a party mode in a quiet Casual update. Players report that heads grow with kills, shrink with deaths, and that voices follow the score. The mode rotates between map groups and only runs on official Casual servers.
The more interesting part is the mutator system under it, with room for 32 rules. LAR, the renamed M14, now has a model and animations, but it is still marked as a work in progress.
