Three days after the Rush Hour update, Valve still has not said the word “pet” in public. The game has, though. Every Chicken Egg now carries an item description written as a care manual, and it answers most of what people have been asking us since Wednesday: when the egg hatches, how long the chick stays a chick, where the feed comes from and what happens if you forget about it. The short version is that you have signed up for a Tamagotchi with a 140-day clock, and Valve wrote the obituary messages before it wrote the patch notes.<\/p>\n

This one is the manual: the full life cycle, the feed rules, the breeds, and the answer to the question that has been sending the most traffic our way, which is “how do I hatch this thing”. You do not, you wait, and the details are below.<\/p>\n

Our own egg is still sitting in its basket, so everything about the stages after hatching comes from the item text and the game files rather than from a bird we have seen. How to Hatch a CS2 Egg: You Cannot Speed It Up<\/h2>\n

The item description on the Chicken Egg is Valve's own text, and it settles the hatching question: “The egg hatches into a chick about a week after you get it.” No action on your part, no feeding, no clicking. The hatch date is fixed the moment you claim the egg (per the game files as documented by SkinSniper), so the only way to get a chicken faster is to have claimed your drop earlier.<\/p>\n

Two things do matter. You need to actually log in, because the game files include a message for eggs whose owners never came back (“Never loved. Never hatched. Those two are related”, which is Valve's writing, not ours). And you need to be Prime: SkinSniper reports that only Prime accounts receive eggs through the Weekly Care Package, which fits with every screenshot we have seen so far. If you are on a free account, no amount of XP will get you a bird.<\/p>\n

Our egg was claimed on Wednesday evening and the tooltip has read “Your egg will hatch soon.” ever since, with no visible countdown. If the “about a week” holds, it opens somewhere around Tuesday or Wednesday. We will update this article when it does.<\/p>\n
