This article stays as the story of the egg itself: how it was found, how you get one, what it looks like and what it means for trading.<\/p>\n<p>On September 22, 2026, Valve shipped the <a href=\"https:\/\/skinsmonkey.com\/blog\/cs2-rush-hour-update-september-2026\">Rush Hour update<\/a>, which included some of the biggest in-game overhauls in a long time, most notably a brand new game mode. Outside of the 3v3 Rush mode, the update also added CS2 chicken eggs, and the patch notes never mentioned them.<\/p>\n<div class=\"aio-answer-block\">\n<strong>CS2 chickens are a pet cosmetic added to Counter-Strike 2 in the Rush Hour update.<\/strong> Prime players receive a Chicken Egg through the <a href=\"https:\/\/skinsmonkey.com\/blog\/cs2-weekly-care-package\">Weekly Care Package<\/a>. The egg hatches into a chick about a week later, the chick grows into a pullet and then a hen, and the bird stays around only as long as you feed it. There are three breeds and 34 colour variants, and Valve did not mention the feature in its official patch notes, which makes this a quite literal easter egg.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>How you get one:<\/strong> only through the Weekly Care Package, and it takes up both reward slots.<\/li>\n<li><strong>How it develops:<\/strong> egg, chick, pullet, hen, then retirement after 140 days, with the Hatchbook as the collection screen.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Variety:<\/strong> 3 breeds (Catalana, Polish, Silkie) with 34 colour variants between them, all tagged High Grade.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Trading status:<\/strong> non-tradable and non-marketable, by Valve's own item description.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>This article covers what the chicken egg is, how it was discovered, how to get one, what it looks like in the client, what the files say about breeds and rarity, and what all of this means for the CS2 skin market.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-the-chicken-egg-was-discovered\">How the Chicken Egg Was Discovered<\/h2>\n<p>The first report that spread widely came from Reddit user u\/YamTurbulent8960, who shared a screenshot of a Chicken Egg in their CS2 drop with the title &#8220;What is this?&#8221;. Other players started checking their drops and found the same thing. Dataminer Gabe Follower quickly linked it to content that had been sitting in the game files since 2025. CSMENT then found hatching and movement animations, chicken sounds and a new folder called &#8220;Pet Book&#8221; in the updated files.<\/p>\n<p>By the morning there were videos showing the full pickup animation, clips of the egg turning into a chick and then a chicken, and a Reddit thread listing every chicken skin the files contain. Valve has still not said anything in public. The only official text about the system is the item descriptions on the egg and the chick, which read like a care manual and which we quote in the pets guide.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-get-a-chicken-egg-in-cs2\">How to Get a Chicken Egg in CS2<\/h2>\n<p>The only method is the Weekly Care Package, the reward you unlock by ranking up during the week. The egg replaces the usual two-slot choice: instead of picking between two separate items, like a skin and a case, the egg occupies both slots (reported by Dexerto and by content creator BancCS, who described it as &#8220;costing both credits&#8221;). <strong>If you take the egg, you claim nothing else that week.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Three things follow from that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You need to earn the drop the normal way, by levelling up your weekly XP through matches. SkinSniper reports that only Prime accounts receive eggs, which matches every screenshot we have seen so far.<\/li>\n<li>You cannot buy an egg from the in-game store, and you cannot buy one from another player. <strong>Eggs are non-tradable.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Whether every Prime account gets an egg on its next drop is still not confirmed. Reports so far are consistent, but Valve has not said whether the egg is guaranteed, random or rolled out in waves.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There is no other source for eggs. An earlier datamine from August 2025 (Gabe Follower, via Escorenews) suggested eggs might be linked to a future &#8220;auction&#8221; feature in the Armory, but nothing in the current build points to that being live, and the Weekly Care Package is the only route anyone has used. Once the egg hatches, the same package is where Chicken Feed comes from, which means the drop most of us clicked through without looking now has a cost attached.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-happens-after-you-claim-the-egg\">What Happens After You Claim the Egg<\/h2>\n<p>Once claimed, the egg does not go into your inventory like a case or a sticker. It appears in the menu next to your character model, where you can inspect it up close. From there the process, as laid out in the item descriptions and the game files, looks like this:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>The egg waits.<\/strong> The item text says it &#8220;hatches into a chick about a week after you get it&#8221;. The hatch date is fixed the moment you claim the egg (per the files, as documented by SkinSniper), so nothing you do speeds it up. On our account the tooltip has read &#8220;Your egg will hatch soon.&#8221; since launch night, with no visible countdown.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The chick hatches.<\/strong> There is a hatching animation, after which you have a chick in the menu. Every egg produces the same yellow chick regardless of what is inside it. You can pet it, inspect it and name it, and it stays in the main menu rather than joining you in matches.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The chick grows.<\/strong> After 22 days the chick becomes a pullet, which is when it reveals its breed and colour and starts appearing with you in matches. After another 28 days it is a hen. A video shared by Ozzny shows all three stages side by side.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The bird retires.<\/strong> A well-fed hen retires 140 days after hatching, with a memorial entry in the Hatchbook. You can only have one pet at a time, so there is no backup chick waiting.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Alongside all this is the Hatchbook, a collection interface where you record your chickens with photos (screenshots by Reddit user u\/cubeself, reported by Dexerto), plus a photo booth with hats and filters described in the files. Neither is live in the client yet. A collection interface is the reason traders paid attention on day one, because in Counter-Strike collections have always turned into markets. This one, so far, is the exception.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-the-egg-looks-like-in-game\">What the Egg Looks Like In-Game<\/h2>\n<p>This is what we can confirm from our own account rather than from other people's clips.<\/p>\n<p>After claiming the Weekly Care Package, the egg appeared in the main menu in a small red wicker basket lined with straw, placed on the ground a step to the right of the character model. It showed up in the same spot on both menu backgrounds we had, Mirage and an industrial map. There is no inventory entry to open, no case-style animation and nothing to click in the loadout screen. The basket is simply part of the menu scene.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"media-8799\" class=\"align-none\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/skinsmonkey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/cs2-chicken-egg-hatch-soon-tooltip.jpg\" alt=\"cs2 chicken egg hatch soon tooltip\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Hovering the cursor over the basket brings up an egg icon, a short status line and two small buttons. The status line on our account reads &#8220;Your egg will hatch soon.&#8221; One button opens the inspect view, the other is an interaction control. There is no timer, progress bar or feeding prompt at this stage, so the egg is a purely passive item until it hatches.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"media-8800\" class=\"align-none\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/skinsmonkey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/cs2-chicken-egg-inspect.jpg\" alt=\"cs2 chicken egg inspect\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>The inspect view works like weapon inspect: the camera cuts to a gloved hand holding the egg against the menu map background, with the item name &#8220;Chicken Egg&#8221; at the top of the screen. Ours is a plain beige egg with light brown speckles. Other players have posted eggs in different colours. That led to early speculation that the variant is decided before hatching, but the chick description settles it the other way: the bird &#8220;shows its breed and style once it grows into a pullet&#8221;, so the egg colour tells you nothing about the chicken.<\/p>\n<p>The basket is also visible in the party lobby. In a party with two friends, the egg sat at our character's feet with all three player models on screen. Since the September 26 hotfix, the eggs of the other players in a menu lobby rest in nests of their own. That makes it the first pet-style item in CS2 that other people can see without inspecting your profile, and from the pullet stage the bird also shows up in matches and on the end-of-match screen.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"chicken-breeds-colours-and-the-rarity-question\">Chicken Breeds, Colours and the Rarity Question<\/h2>\n<p>The breed picture has firmed up since launch. The game files contain three chicken types: Catalana (the plain one we were calling &#8220;standard chicken&#8221; on day one), Polish (the one with the feathery crest) and Silkie (the soft white one). Catalana has 13 colourways, Polish 12 and Silkie 9, which makes 34. An early Reddit count of 35 turned out to include one item counted twice; the third-party database csgoskins.gg lists 36 pet entries, which is the 34 chickens plus the egg and the chick.<\/p>\n<p>Many of them do not look like chickens. In addition to the brown, white and tan birds, the files have bright blue, purple, yellow-to-blue fades, nuclear red and toxic green chickens (colour details from the Reddit post and PC Gamer).<\/p>\n<p>Two more details come from a Reddit file dig by u\/kfalory and have not been confirmed elsewhere: the eggs themselves come in seven colours, with no known link between egg colour and the chicken inside, and six chickens in the files (two Catalana, four Silkie) currently do not drop from eggs at all. Those six have grey elements that could be recoloured later, which would work like the pattern system on charms. Treat both as datamine speculation until someone hatches one.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"media-8805\" class=\"align-none\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/skinsmonkey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/cs2-chicken-skins-game-files.jpg\" alt=\"cs2 chicken skins game files\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>The current state of knowledge:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Confirmed by the item descriptions, the game files and our own account:<\/strong> three breeds, 34 colour variants, the reveal at the pullet stage, an inspect view that works like weapon inspect, and the basket being visible to other players in a lobby.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tagged, but not explained:<\/strong> every one of the 36 pet items carries the same &#8220;High Grade&#8221; rarity label in the database. There is no Covert chicken and no Contraband hen in how Valve has tagged them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Not confirmed:<\/strong> whether some colours drop more often than others. SkinSniper has published estimated weights pulled from the files (Catalana Tan and Silkie White as the most common) and is careful to call them estimates. Until pullets appear in matches in numbers, treat any &#8220;1 in 200&#8221; chicken talk as guesswork.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The August 2025 datamine suggested colour patterns might be &#8220;unique for every account&#8221;, which would be a very different system from a rarity ladder. Nothing in the current build settles that question either way.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-you-trade-or-sell-cs2-chicken-eggs\">Can You Trade or Sell CS2 Chicken Eggs?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>No, and this one is no longer a community report.<\/strong> The item description on the egg states that it is non-tradable and non-marketable, and the same applies to the chick, the hen and Chicken Feed. Csgoskins.gg lists all 36 pet items with no price data and no offers. This is the first cosmetic category Valve has added to Counter-Strike with no market attached at all; charms were on the Steam Community Market within days of launch.<\/p>\n<p>This may still change. Valve has adjusted the rules around existing items before (souvenir skins becoming usable in trade-ups earlier this year is the most recent example), and a cosmetic with 34 variants and a dedicated collection book is an odd thing to build if you intend it to stay locked forever. Nothing in the files suggests a change is planned, though, so plan around the chickens staying where they are and keep the tradable half of your inventory moving on <a href=\"https:\/\/skinsmonkey.com\/\">SkinsMonkey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If chickens ever do become tradable, the first wave of eggs from September 2026 will be the oldest in existence, and Counter-Strike collectors have always cared about that.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-valve-left-it-out-of-the-patch-notes\">Why Valve Left It Out of the Patch Notes?<\/h2>\n<p>We can only guess. The omission fits how Valve usually operates. Valve has shipped surprise content before, from hidden map easter eggs to features that sat in the game files for months before being switched on. By leaving the egg out of the notes, Valve turns a feature launch into a community discovery. It also leaves room to adjust timers, odds and trading rules before writing any of them down, and the hotfixes since launch have already touched the system once, with the September 26 line about eggs resting in nests.<\/p>\n<p>The reception on r\/cs2 has been mostly sour. The most upvoted replies in the largest explainer thread are variations on &#8220;anything but anti-cheat&#8221; and complaints about spending two Weekly Care Packages on a pet that leaves after 140 days regardless. A smaller group likes it for the same reason Valve probably built it: it is the kind of low-stakes silliness Counter-Strike has always allowed itself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The only place the original changelog mentions chickens at all is a Gameplay line stating that chickens can now take damage from the Zeus x27.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-the-chicken-egg-means-for-cs2-trading\">What the Chicken Egg Means for CS2 Trading<\/h2>\n<p>There is no market impact, because there is nothing to buy or sell. That is unusual for a major CS2 update: the <a href=\"https:\/\/skinsmonkey.com\/blog\/cs2-knife-crafting-update\">knife crafting update<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/skinsmonkey.com\/blog\/counter-strike-22-may-update-iem-cologne-major-2026-hub\">May souvenir overhaul<\/a> both moved prices within hours, while this one only moved the discussion.<\/p>\n<p>Five points for anyone who trades:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>It is a new collectible category without a market.<\/strong> CS2 has weapon finishes, knives, gloves, agents, stickers, patches, charms, music kits and pins, and every one of those ended up with a secondary market. Pets are the first addition that Valve has locked to the account from day one.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Weekly Care Package has a price now.<\/strong> The egg takes both slots, and from the chick stage onward, Chicken Feed competes with the case or sticker you would otherwise take. If you sell every weekly case, budget for the weeks you will spend feeding instead.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The upside is visibility, not value.<\/strong> A pullet on the scoreboard and in the end-of-match screen is the closest thing CS2 has had to a &#8220;look at me&#8221; cosmetic since agents, and it costs nothing but attention.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do not pay for anything &#8220;chicken-related&#8221;.<\/strong> Expect Discord offers and case sites claiming to sell eggs, feed or rare chickens. Since none of these items can leave an account, any such offer is a scam or a misunderstanding.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fewer cases enter the game, but not many fewer.<\/strong> Every player who takes an egg, and then feed, skips that week's case or skin drop, which is the one way this feature can touch the market at all. Two things keep the effect small: you can only have one pet, so each account gives up at most one drop a week and only while it keeps feeding, and the bot farms that produce a large share of weekly drops have no reason to take an egg.
